If you undergo surgery as part of your health insurance coverage, you must undergo medical treatment for at least six months . Visiting the outpatient surgery department does not mean that surgery can be performed immediately. Medical treatment also includes a one to two week hospital stay for education and testing (reviewing lifestyle habits to reduce weight and manage blood sugar, and conducting tests necessary for surgery).

Depending on your body type and previous abdominal surgery, the surgery will take 2-3 hours for sleeve surgery, and 3-4 hours for sleeve plus, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, or OAGB.

・For medical treatment covered by insurance, the maximum amount of out-of-pocket expenses varies depending on the patient's income and share of the burden ( https://www.mhlw.go.jp/content/000333279.pdf ). It is approximately 100,000 to 300,000 yen.

- Private treatment for Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and OAGB costs 2.5 million yen (tax included, as of August 2025).

- People whose general condition is so poor that they cannot be given general anesthesia

●Those whose families do not understand (we may refuse admission)

- People who cannot tolerate the possibility of blood transfusion

●Those who cannot build a trusting relationship with medical staff or who use abusive language or violence against medical staff will not be able to receive medical treatment at Jikei University Hospital.

●People with drug or alcohol addiction (please prioritize treatment for these)

●To prevent respiratory complications, you will be asked to quit smoking for at least one month before surgery. If you are a smoker or are suspected of being a smoker, you will not be able to undergo surgery at our hospital. If smoking is discovered during your hospital stay, you will be forced to leave the hospital.

* Regarding smoking: This includes cigarettes, heated tobacco, e-cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and kiseru.
