Comprehensive treatment utilizing the strengths of a general hospital
Let's think together about future treatments at Jikei University Hospital

How are (severe) obesity treated?
Proper diet and exercise are effective for weight loss
However, for those with severe obesity, it is difficult to lose weight sufficiently through this alone.
Recently, there are effective anti-obesity medications available, but they cannot be started immediately.
Side effects, cost, and continuity remain issues.
On the other hand, surgery for severe obesity has the problem of invasiveness,
A scientifically proven method for long-term weight loss and metabolic improvement .
It is the most commonly performed gastrointestinal surgery in the world.
Diet and exercise therapy
Diet and exercise are the foundations of obesity treatment, and without them, dieting will not be successful. However, it is known that it is difficult to lose weight sufficiently through diet alone. Many dietary therapy methods have been proposed, but there is still no absolute method, and the type and level of exercise that can be done will vary depending on the individual's situation. At Jikei University Hospital, you can receive support from nutritionists and physical therapists.

Which obese people should consider surgery?
1
For those with severe obesity*,
Even if you can lose weight by working hard on your diet and exercise,
The weight loss is much less than ideal,
It probably didn't last long?
Surgeons have high hopes for future drug treatments.
You won't know if it's right for you until you try it.
If you hesitate to undergo obesity treatment or if treatment is not successful,
Obesity-related health problems will inevitably progress.
Once the disease has progressed, there is no going back.
Naturally, many people are afraid of surgery.
But if you postpone surgery,
You are also more likely to get less benefit from surgery.
Are you unsure about which treatment is right for you ?
Please consider the treatment option of surgery.
Why not ask your surgeon?
*To be precise, the BMI must be 35 or above, but since insurance coverage is for a BMI of 32 or above, on this website we will define severe obesity as a BMI of 32 or above.

Reasons why people choose our hospital
01
Team medical care that supports obesity patients
I don't think anyone wants to be fat until they become severely obese. I'm sure many of you have tried various diets up until now. However, it is difficult for severely obese people to lose weight on their own. We will never dismiss your efforts up to now. Why not think about dieting together with us? We will support you with team medical care.

02
Selectable obesity treatments
At Jikei University Hospital, internists and surgeons work together to propose the most appropriate treatment for you. We offer a range of treatments to suit your needs, from nutritional guidance and exercise therapy to evidence-based weight loss medication, endoscopic gastroplasty performed by a specialist endoscopist , and weight loss and metabolic improvement surgery.

03
Types of surgery available
At Jikei University Hospital, your surgery will be performed by a surgical team boasting some of the most extensive surgical experience in Japan. We would like to work with you to determine what surgery you truly need. In addition to sleeve gastrectomy, which accounts for over 90% of surgeries in Japan, we also offer sleeve plus surgery (sleeve gastrectomy with bypass surgery) as covered by health insurance. At our hospital , sleeve plus surgery comes in three variations: sleeve bypass, sleeve PJB, and sleeve bipartition . In addition, we also offer Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and OAGB (both of which allow the stomach to be preserved) on a private basis. We would like to propose the surgical procedure that is best suited to you.

04
All cases are performed using laparoscopic surgery with minimal scarring.

Using the latest 4K cameras and surgical instruments, we aim to perform safe and careful laparoscopic surgery under clear images. Surgery is performed using 5-10mm port incisions (4-5 locations) and 15mm port incision (1 location: 15mm for removing the resected stomach). Because the incisions are small, there is little pain, and patients can return to their daily lives quickly.
05
An anesthesiologist experienced in weight loss surgery will be in charge of anesthesia.
There are still not many anesthesiologists in Japan who are accustomed to treating severely obese patients. At Jikei University Hospital, Dr. Kida of the Department of Anesthesiology leads the way by administering general anesthesia using a method that puts minimal strain on the body and monitoring the patient during surgery.

06
術後鎮痛も積極的に行っています
Even with surgery that leaves only a small scar, the amount of postoperative pain varies from person to person. That's why Jikei University Hospital uses PCA (Patient Controlled Analgesia, or "self-controlled analgesia" in Japanese). A medical professional sets up the PCA pump, and the patient presses a button when they feel pain, allowing them to immediately receive a safe and effective amount of pain medication. The advantage of PCA is that the patient, who has the best understanding of their pain state, can use pain medication immediately when they feel pain.
In addition, a specialized team called the Jikei University Hospital Postoperative Pain Management Team will work to alleviate postoperative pain as much as possible.

07
A backup system unique to a university hospital
Many patients with severe obesity have problems with multiple organs. We work with the necessary departments before surgery to ensure a safe surgery. Weight loss and metabolic improvement surgery is said to be one of the safest digestive surgeries, but you may encounter unexpected situations. In the unlikely event that this happens, Jikei University Hospital will do everything in its power to protect you.
08
Surgeons who are well versed in treating surgical complications
Weight loss and metabolic improvement surgery is not 100% safe. Although rare, complications such as postoperative bleeding, suture failure (leakage), obstruction, and reflux esophagitis can occur. At Jikei University Hospital, surgeons with expertise in treating complications are among the most experienced in Japan, and will work in cooperation with the radiology and endoscopy departments to respond appropriately in the unlikely event of such a situation.
